That being said, it may still be possible for companions to die due to a choice or narrative descision the player makes, though we likely won't know for sure until the game releases.
Bethesda has stated multiple times (like in this new interview with game director Todd Howard) that companion characters, including Dogmeat, are invincible in battle.
Thank goodness Dogmeat can't be killed in combat. The video features plenty of footage of in-game Dogmeat as well, showing how River's actions translated to the game. Looks like the team had plenty of run bringing River to the office to meet the team. If the Internet loves one thing more than cat videos it's dog videos, especially a dog that plays a leading role in one of the biggest video games of the year.
Calling it cute would be an understatement.
